That changes the shape of this comparison: it is no longer AirTag versus Tile versus SmartTag2 on equal footing. It is “which ecosystem is your phone in.”

What actually changed with AirTag 2

The original AirTag is now discontinued by Apple; a few retailers are still selling remaining stock at a discount (commonly cited around $15 to $17 per unit while supplies last). If you find genuinely deep clearance pricing on the original, it still works on the Find My network today. Otherwise, AirTag 2 costs the same as the original did, so there is little reason to seek out old stock.

Network size: still the deciding factor

An item tracker is only as good as the number of nearby phones that can detect it and report its location. This is the single biggest reason AirTag wins for iPhone owners and has been since the category started.

Apple’s Find My network draws on every iPhone, iPad, and Mac with Find My enabled, a figure Apple states as over a billion devices worldwide. Tile’s network, now folded into the Life360 app after Life360’s acquisition of Tile, is built from roughly 70 million combined Tile and Life360 app users, according to Life360. Samsung SmartTag2 relies on Galaxy phones specifically; Samsung has not published an exact device count, but Galaxy’s global Android share puts it well below Apple’s network and above Tile’s in markets with strong Samsung presence.

In practice, this means a lost AirTag 2 in a busy area is likely to update its location within minutes because so many iPhones pass by. A lost Tile or SmartTag2 can take much longer to update, especially in places with fewer of their own users, such as smaller airports or rural areas.

Precision Finding: AirTag 2’s real advantage

Within close range, AirTag 2 uses Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip to show directional arrows and a live distance reading on an iPhone or, new for this generation, on an Apple Watch Series 9 or later. Apple’s own claim is about 1.5x the range of the original AirTag’s Precision Finding.

Tile Pro has no equivalent. It shows relative signal strength (“getting warmer”) rather than a direction and distance, which works but takes longer when an item is buried in a bag or under furniture.

Samsung SmartTag2 has its own version of Precision Finding, but only on Galaxy phones with a UWB chip, which Samsung specifies as Galaxy S21 and newer. On a compatible phone it functions similarly to AirTag’s.

Battery, volume, and price trade-offs

Battery life differences across all three are small in practical terms. All three use a replaceable CR2032 coin cell, and Samsung’s roughly 500-day rating is the longest of the three on paper, but you are still swapping a battery about once a year regardless of which tracker you choose.

Tile Pro’s speaker is the loudest at 128dB, useful if you rely on sound rather than Precision Finding to locate an item, such as an older phone without UWB. AirTag 2’s speaker is louder than the original AirTag’s but still the quietest of the three by most published measurements; its Precision Finding is meant to make sound less necessary in the first place.

On price, AirTag 2 and SmartTag2 sit closest together and both discount well below list price during sales. Tile Pro is the most expensive per unit at full price. One real hidden cost: unlike Tile Pro and SmartTag2, which have a built-in keychain hole, AirTag 2 does not, so budget for a keychain holder or loop accessory.
